Bind Your Future Self

People who impose costly deadlines on themselves perform better than people who keep their options open.

solidHow strong is the evidence?

Good evidence behind it, but fewer people have checked it independently.

Why it works

Your present self knows your future self will rationalise. A commitment made now removes the future negotiation entirely.

What to do about it

  • Put money, reputation or another person on the line: a deposit, a public date, a co-signer.
  • Schedule the escalation in advance — the automatic increase in savings, the pre-booked next session.
  • Make the escape route expensive, not impossible. Impossible commitments get abandoned wholesale.

Where people go wrong

Commitments with no enforcer. A promise to yourself, unwitnessed and uncosted, is a preference.
