Learning styles

People learn better when taught in their preferred modality — visual, auditory, kinaesthetic.

What actually happened

No study using the required design has found the interaction (Pashler et al., 2008; Willingham, 2015). Around 90% of teachers still believe it.

What to do instead

Match the modality to the material, not to the person. Maps for geography, sound for music, practice for skills.

The laws that do this job properly

Every law on Useful Mind tells you how strong the evidence behind it is. The ones that failed are kept here rather than quietly deleted, because knowing which advice is wrong saves you as much as knowing which is right.
